Brief Info

Emmanuel Osafo is an Associate Professor, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and former Head of the Department of Animal Science, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi. His specialization is in the area of Ruminant Nutrition/Production and has over twenty-five years of experience in teaching and researching in animal agriculture in Ghana and Africa.

Prof. Osafo graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Science and Technology (UST), Kumasi with a BSc Agriculture degree in 1980 and subsequently an an MSc. at the then University of Ifé, (now Obafemi Awolowo University) Ile Ifé, Nigeria and PhD at University of Reading, England in 1993. In 1981 he was employed as a Teaching Assistant at the Department of Animal Science, UST and has since rose through the ranks in the University to Associate Professor. He was elected Vice Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, KNUST in 2011.

Teaching and Research Experience

My teaching and research experience includes teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in animal production and nutrition with emphasis on ruminants. I also teach courses in Animal Behaviour to undergraduate agriculture, veterinary medicine as well as postgraduate students. Issues of Animal Welfare are discussed and it is becoming prominent in the course delivery. Much of my research experience is in the evaluation of forages as ruminant feed. The research findings cover mainly work done in Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tanzania and Ghana. Emmanuel Osafo have authored or co-authored over 60 Journal and Conference articles and 16 other publications. My publications have been mainly on evaluating straws as feed for ruminants and I have been involved with a team of researchers who developed the ‘self selection’ technology for improving intake by ruminants. Basically this technology involves offering the ruminant more straw than it can consume and it would then select the more nutritious parts of the straw, thus improving on the utilization of an otherwise poor quality feed. This technology was adopted by Department for International Development’s (DFID) in its Research Into Use Programme (RIUP) to be used by farmers in the developing world.
